Learning goals

After working through this resource, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of LCA as a tool for evaluating the environmental impact of pork production in different parts of the pork chain in western European countries.
  • explain notions in the LCA-terminology like 'functional unit', 'system boundaries' etc.
  • describe the problems related to different pork production systems from an LCA perspective and possible conflicts with animal welfare and food quality
  • describe the problems related to 'system expansion and allocation'
