Consumer awareness

Consumer preferences have changed in recent years from fat carcasses to lean carcasses and production has also been more focused on high growth rate and efficiency of feed conversion, as well as environmentally friendly production - all factors which are to some degree improved by the production of entire males.

Unfortunately it is concern for animal welfare that is the most important argument for the pig industry to change procedure. As documented above there are many good reasons for stopping the practice of piglet castration but the production of entire male pigs creates a dilemma in commercial production in most countries, with regard to both animal welfare and meat product quality because of the problem of increased fighting between entire male pigs and the problem of boar taint.
