The pig abattoir has been transformed from a low-capacity, low-technology sector to a technology-oriented, mechanized industry with high-capacity plants and a requirement for high productivity and quality. However, the handling of pigs prior to slaughter at most slaughter plants is still performed in almost the same manner as before. This method of handling is not appropriate for the high slaughter speeds required by the newer facilities.
