Objectives

This learning resource provides information on the process of driving pigs to stunning and enables you to critically evaluate how driving systems can influence pig welfare and pork quality. The resource does not consider the preceding or subsequent procedures, such as transport or stunning methods.

For employees in industry (5 notional study hours; 1/4 ECTS):

  • Work on the content of this learning resource.
  • Summarize your thoughts on what you have learnt from the learning resource and comment on the practical implications in your organisation. Post your summary on the Comments page.
  • Do the self-assessment.
  • Read the key messages.
  • Write an evaluation of this learning resource.

For students in higher education (20 notional study hours; 1 ECTS):

  • Work on the content of this learning resource and write a list of pros and cons for the different systems (single file, double file and group handling).
  • Write a well-reasoned recommendation to a decision maker. The recommendation should in 300 words summarize your opinion of a specific system for driving pigs to stunning, from an animal stress, animal welfare and meat quality point of view.

Alternative 1: Produce a video to demonstrate good and/or bad points in that system of driving pigs. Write an introductory text for the video (100 words maximum). If you want to share the video please send us the link (training@q-porkchains.org). We might add it to the learning resource!

Alternative 2: Conduct a hazard identification of animal welfare problems at the local abattoir and state the good and bad points.

  • Add at least five new definitions to our wikipedia (on the platform).
