Iodine deficiency!
Iodine is an essential element that cannot be synthesized by the body. The iodine content of food is related to the iodine available in soils, which has decreased because of its water solubility and removal by rainwater. As a preventive for iodine deficiency, the World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced a strategy of universal table salt iodization. Therefore, if salt intake were to be reduced, it would be important to make sure that recommended iodine intake levels were maintained in some other way (WHO, 2006).
It is worth noting that the salt used in manufacturing pig meat products does not contain added iodine.
Introducing iodization of manufacturing salt could be another way of preventing iodine deficiency.
